 Pumpelly Estate: history & services

The “fun part” of owning a small estate with a bed and breakfast as well as an events venue is getting to know and be of service to a diversity of people. My partner, consultants, staff and I work hard to make each stay and event comfortable, convenient and smooth.

In 2007 I was offered the opportunity to purchase the property. My first impression was of the grandeur of the marvelous architecture and the soundness of the structures. In February 2008, Pumpelly Estate was purchased and underwent some updating, renovation and repairs. Combining talents of experience in renovation, interior design, hospitality service, business acumen and with true grit, my family and I worked to bring my sound business plan based on a quality environment with personal service to life.

Early history and becoming a Bed & Breakfast

My partners (not so silent) and I are proud of what the Pumpelly Estate offers to guests. The Georgian style house was built in 1902 by Claude Bragdon for Gurdon Pumpelly and his wife, Kiamesha Armstrong. The Pumpelly family held large tracts of land and engaged in timbering and growing tobacco. Mr. Pumpelly owned a cigar factory in Owego. The house remained in the Pumpelly Family until the 1970’s when it was sold at auction. In the late 1980’s it was sold again and became a bed and breakfast. Throughout the years, the carriage house was used as a garage for storage and an occasional event. Upon purchasing the property in February 2008, it was decided to retain the house as a B&B. By staying within B&B guidelines for New York State, guests can be accommodated while maintaining the integrity of the original architecture.

Pumpelly House B&B, amenities and extras!

Although the Estate is presented with the friendliness and hospitality of a Bed & Breakfast, I work hard to elevate service and the surroundings to what has best been described as an “intimate, quality hotel”. With close proximity to the Owego Lockheed Martin facility and area computer, aviation and electronic businesses, as well as the emerging biotechnology industry, Cornell and Binghamton Universities, Pumpelly House offers private, high quality accommodations for contractors and guests. Please ask about our government rates, available Monday-Thursday.

You won’t find doilies or funny knick-knacks; they just aren’t my style. Instead, you will find comfort, convenience and elegance, along with modern amenities, such as WiFi and cable HDTV throughout the house.
We receive many compliments on the comfort of our beds and the wonderful feel of our linens from our guests. I pass those on to my mom and our housekeeper who are responsible for hand ironing our bed linens and believes in a well presented bed. Pumpelly Estate is designed to ease the stress of a long day. The Butler’s Pantry is stocked with complimentary soft drinks and bottled water, along with snack bars, fresh fruit and... the cookie jar. If you are lucky, I will be filing an order of our Signature Truffles and will have a few extra to share. The coffee pot is always full. Hot chocolate and tea selections are available 24/7. A microwave and refrigerator are available for guest use.

BudgetTravel.com has voted Owego as America’s Coolest Small Town. You will find unique shopping and dining in the Historic Owego Marketplace. However, most of Owego’s restaurants cling to tradition and are closed Sunday and Monday nights. Pumpelly House offers lunches and dinners by reservation based on availability.

Planning events, no matter the size of the group or the event, I take personal pride in a seamlessly run event.
The Carriage House has been slightly altered and updated to meet the needs of a social or business venue.  We offer full conference services and wedding packages.
Day retreats are popular at the estate. Whether using the Carriage House, Pumpelly House or the entire Estate, I enjoy making the event stress-free and unique.

Bridal events are special. I offer understanding service throughout the months and moments prior to the event. My family and I take personal pleasure in presenting grounds that are well kept. We are adding gardens and updating planting as we progress through the seasons. Pumpelly Estate is planned as a personal setting for wedding events. We will never be wedding factory. Each event is distinctive, guided by care and experience. My staff and I pay attention to details so that the bridal party and guests don’t have to take care of them. I get great reward form a hug, smile, tear and the words, “It was perfect!”
